The Altissia Chair: A Network of Experts in the Development of “Digital Cultures and Ethics”

8 January 2024

In 2018, Altissia began a fruitful collaboration with UCLouvain's Faculty of Philosophy, Arts and Letters (FIAL) to launch the Altissia Chair in "Digital Cultures and Ethics". But what is a University Chair, you may ask?

Understanding the Concept of a University Chair

A Chair is a research and teaching entity funded by various sources, including the government or a company, that supports the activities of a group of teachers and researchers. Its main objective is to promote a discipline or research on a specific subject, with a view to imparting knowledge and improving the teaching of students in the name of progress.

Objectives and Structure of the Altissia Chair

The Altissia Chair links Altissia to the academic origins of its product, highlighting its commitment to digital research in the humanities and social sciences. It brings together experts, professors and researchers from FIAL, exploring the links between the humanities and the digital world, with a focus on philosophy, linguistics, languages, history, archaeology, literature and more. Their work focuses on new technologies and their ethical implications.

The Impact of the Altissia Chair on the FIAL Faculty

Thanks to the Altissia Chair, the FIAL Faculty has been able to develop an essential area of expertise and adapt its course programmes to better meet students' needs. In particular, the Chair supports two courses offered by the Faculty, namely "Pratiques du Numérique en Sciences Humaines" (Digital Practices in the Humanities) and "Enjeux Culturels et Éthiques du Numérique" (Digital Culture and Ethics Issues).

Advantages and Opportunities of this Collaboration

This collaboration presents advantages for the faculty's researchers and professors, enabling them to maintain and enrich their networks and debates through the research and events organised by the Chair. They can also benefit from the experience of a company with close ties to the digital world, placing people at the heart of its concerns. In return, Altissia benefits from these skills as it considers new developments for its language learning platform.

The Altissia Chair: A Renewed Commitment

In 2022, the Chair was renewed for a further four years. By supporting this initiative, Altissia contributes to the promotion of a humanistic society, encouraging the humanities, technology and the private sector to collaborate hand-in-hand in the service of society as a whole. In so doing, it remains true to its DNA and mission: to find the perfect balance between technology and people.
